Linus will move to Moscow to work with Elbrus 227

K.G. writes "A Russian computer related news agency Computerra said today that Linus Torvalds will move to Moscow, quitting his job in Transmeta to develop a Linux compatible OS intended to run on the E2K processor from Elbrus International. In a russian-language article named "Closer to Dad" Computerra said that the factors that convinced Linus to move to Russia were "more interesting and promising job", closeness to his father who works as a Moscow correspondent for Finnish radio & TV, and a more familiar climate, similar to Linus's homeland Finland (they don't get a lot of snow in LA, do they... ). They also quoted the future boss of Linus, professor Boris Babayan: "The great professional qualities of Torvalds will help create a dependable OS for the E2K processor, fully compatible with Linux, in a tight deadline". Why is this guy so important?

Linus didn't take a job in Russia because he wanted to. He fled because he *had* to.

The NSA finally noticed all the crypto code in the kernel. Not the "loopback hooks"; those are an obvious red herring. But the IDEA implementation in drivers/net/pseudo/pseudocode, the steganography in the low bits that come of drivers/char/random.c, and the experimental Merced firmware virus hidden in drivers/scsi/qlogicfs_asm.c.

Taking him out at Transmeta was out of the question, of course, because the control for Transmeta comes straight from the Bavarian Illuminati. So they tried a "small job" at his home. But they forgot about Tove (code name: "kill -9").

Paranoid? Ask yourself this: why do you think they call it *RED* Hat?

Dear Fellow Members of the Linux Community,

It is with a solemn heart that I break this news to you. The posting speaks truth. Like most of you, I thought it was an April's Fool joke. In great mirth, I emailed Linus. Imagine my surprise when he sent back the following reply:

So there it is. From our fearless leader himself. I hope we will all respect his decision. It is past midnight now. Time for me to sleep.

PS: Sorry, I forgot my password. Hence the AC posting.
  • Wasn't the "Linus joins Microsoft" thing done last year? In any case, I think you could have a LOT more fun with an April Fool's joke involving RMS. :)

The computer thingy that's a big box with blinky lights on it is a computer toaster. It is a super special interactive toaster, you put bread into the slot in the front, and push its buttons until the bread is toasted. Hours of fun (that's why it cost so much).

The thing with lots of buttons is a cat bed, what else could it be?
  • Sengan's in England, isn't he? If so, he did a great job managing to post this article at exactly midnight on April Fool's Day :-).

April Fools.. Maybe the whole Segfault [segfault.org] thing is in on it too.
  • This is not a small thing. Has there been any confirmation from, say Linus himself -- or at least Transmeta? While I'm sure Linux development would go on no matter what (Linus has made that abundantly clear) this isn't a quick decision to be made - especially considering he's gotten settled in in California, as well as his children.

Basically, what I'm saying, is "Is this true?"

  • A valiant attempt, but It doesn't look like you sucked in any /.'ers.

    Good story though
  • Posted by Wayne Steele:

It appears segfault.org has temporarily closed its site due to the latest developments in the potential suit being brought against them, User Friendly, and Be Dope. The latter two sites are business as usual for the moment.

Perhaps we'll know more by April 2nd?
  • Bzzt, wrong. Red Hat is named after a red hat. Sorry.
  • ...if you view the source code, there's an awful lot of English in there........almost like someone arranged with the site to post their "article" (to add legitimacy)..........

    Who am I?
    Why am here?
    Where is the chocolate?
  • I doubt it. It started too early and has gone on too long.

    No. I'm right. I'm certain it's a joke.
I've been following up on this stuff, and I've gotten too many strange responses. Besides, why would MS go after these sites? Their primary readers already hate MS...

This is one massive, well-coordinated April Fool's joke. Slashdot is in on it, too. Expect a story tomorrow about how Microsoft is shutting those sites down due to libel.

I remember a comment from either CmdrTaco or Hemos a while back about BIG plans for the April Fool's day. This is it.
  • MS is the only thing that the three sites (userfriendly, bedope, segfault) have in common.

And the same audience... And the people who run these sites know each other... And they're all part of the same MS-hating community.
Slashdot is in on it, but only to provide the final piece -- a big story on the first concerning the lawsuits...
Slashdot couldn't pretend like it was being threatened or else we'd have a massive media frenzy and then the joke would be revealed early... like checking to see if a suit has actually been filed in the appropriate courts.

I'll bet you a $1000 the lawsuit does not exist.
They probably planned it at LinuxWorld...
  • acshully we had quite a few snow flurries here this winter, BUT that thawed pretty fast...i'm sure Linus is used to slightly larger amounts of snow than most ppl from silicon valley are ;)
  • From where I sit, it says 5:00pm MST.. Since MST is GMT-7, I'm guessing it was posted by cron at 12:00AM GMT. ;)
  • And RMS is cutting his beard off, Microsoft is filing bankruptcy, and the next president is a woman.
  • dude, if you havent figured out that this whole forum is an april fool's joke, then the egg is on *your* face :)
  • User Friendly's site has gone down as well... This is evil! I hope Microsoft (as I believe it is safe to assume is behind this) gets what they deserve for this...
  • by nickm ( 1468 )
Well, this little April Fool managed to get some of the facts wrong. First off, Linus lives in Santa Clara, not LA. Trust me, Northern California is a completely different state from Southern California.
    --
  • by nickm ( 1468 )
Of course, Santa Clara is a completely different beast from San Francisco.
    --
  • Actually, I would think it would be the other way around. It would seem to me the number of software releases would be inversely related to the number of times the developer was "doing it". More software releases, less doing it, More doing it, less software releases...
  • MMmmm, Whitehouse interns...
  • Living in NZ means I am normally quite a few hours ahead of the rest of the world ( don't wory, I won't tell you what happens). I've been getting this April Fools crap all day.

The best trick before this was a Compaq ad for a mouse that can recharge the batteries in your laptop - it included a special game to make recharging easy and fun!

  • Taking away the best talent from the US?

But, hard to believe why Linus Torvalds wants to work in Moscow instead of the Silicon Valley... he has a family and he is considered normal by most people. (I.e., it is more believable if someone say RMS is moving to Moscow.)

  • And why the AC post? Perhaps.. Alan forgot his password, but honestly how long does it take to get another /. account/pass..a whole 2 minutes? Depending on how bogged down the server is. So maybe that point is arguable.

Well, I you can get the password re-emailed to you, so this is almost certainly Bull.

I thought that Linus was in Santa Clara, not LA. And just for the record, the last time Santa Clara had snow was 1976.
  • This "letter from Alan Cox" is clearly a hoax, which in no way indicates that the original newsitem from sengan is either true or false.

  • But then I remembered "kremvax". Those peskie Russkies have done this before.

This brief history of mcsun [eu.net] (and its mcvax predecessor) seems to suggest "kremvax" was an invention of the Dutch, not of the Russians....

  • and a more familiar climate, similar to Linus's homeland Finland (they don't get a lot of snow in LA, do they... ).

One presumes the above is Sengan's own April Fool's joke (my Russian vocabulary has largely evaporated - or, at least, been moved to tertiary storage - but there wasn't anything about LA in the article), given that Transmeta isn't in LA.

But we don't get much snow here in Silicon Valley, either.

  • We routinely get snow in the hills

Yeah, I've seen it through the smog on the way to work.

and we got actual, real snow in the valley proper about a month ago (albeit for only a few minutes).

I must've been inside when that happened. (The hail, on the other hand, I was in the middle of.)

  • Right on brother. Damn Nixon's megalomania.
  • While *I* send my resume to Transmeta!

(I hear they need help in the mail room)
  • the site is indeed legit. I looked through it and it seems to be a nice site. They even have forums for Linux and BeOS fans. Intrestingly enough, they have slashdot-style polls with a 'huh?' answer being an option. (gee, where did they get this idea from?).
Oh, and this is somewhat related, they have an article Babayan vs Intel which I didn't read. They also had a poll about this and something like 50% believe it's for real.
The article might be a joke. Or maybe it's just so they get more hits? Who knows?
  • ... I guess my weekend starts now: I only read /. at work.. ;)
  • Actually, Blueberry and Grape are faster. Darker shades of translucence allow less light to interfere with the workings of the machine, keeping the (already cool) G3 a little cooler. This provides for a slightly faster speed.

Lime is somewhere in the middle, if I recall.

  • That could actually work, though. At least the mouse could generate enough to provide its own 5 volts and a little to spare. Of course the mouse would weigh about as much as a small brick and you'd have to change from one hand to the other regularly to keep one arm from being a shirt size larger than the other from the muscle build-up.

  • Actually, I believe it was the barbecue grill manufacturers and such trying to get more daylight for people to use their products. At least it was definitely them behind the change of the start from the last weekend of April to the first weekend of April a few years ago.

  • I don't read Russian, and since most of their pages look like extended ascii apparently my browser doesn't read Cyrillic, but I clicked some of the links on the sight (found something from March 1st that seemed to be talking about Linux and Merced)so I'm pretty sure that the site is legit even if the story isn't, but it occurred to me that a great 4/1 trick would be if Slashdot, including all of the previous Slashdot pages, polls, Ask Slashdot's, etc., was suddenly in Russian. :-)

(hope this doesn't start a rash of consultants telling the PHB's "see, we told you this Linus guy is a commie, all those free software beatniks are!"

  • Is it just me or does this have
    APRIL FOOLS
    written all over it?

    BTW. segfault.org is down, claiming:

    This site is closed

As many of you have been following, over the past week we have been engaged in discussions with a third party about their objections to
the content of stories posted onto this web site.

As a result of the latest stage of these discussions, I have decided to take this web site down until the issue is fully resolved.

I greatly appreciate all the e-mails and messages of support I have received from you, the readers, and I promise I will fight this one
    through to the end.

See you on the flip side!

I am willing to BET that is an APRIL FOOL too.

  • Looks like you weren't the only one. It did get me for a few seconds too, I'll admit. But then I remembered "kremvax". Those peskie Russkies have done this before.
  • Quite so. Must remember to check my memory against the Jargon File before posting in future.
  • Um.... if it's april foolery, it's terribly annoying. :P
  • Ya... something along the lines of "RMS wins the NY State lottery. Rethinks whole philosophy regarding free beer...."
  • It's not in the USA, so I think it would be an E1. Not that it really matters since the post is bogus, but it's the only (technology) related thing that I can see here.
  • Thank you for this lovely piece of info! After reading about Caldera's battles with MS, ESR, and flames, etc..., it's nice to be able to laugh once again.

The link to the Russian web site was very good, very inspired thinking. However, there was only one thing missing. Sengan should have added a commentary at the end. Something like how he totally approved of this move and that the computer expertise in Europe was much better than what the average American thought it was. Now that would have generated a few thoughtful replies.
  • I just realized something. That link is to a Russian web site. We all know what happens when /. posts a link. Right now, there a Ruskie running around shouting "Capitalistic Running Dog cyber attack! They're trying to take down our server!" If the server stays up, then the same guy starts yelling, "I'm Invincible!"

Tomorrow in Pravda, "Cmdr Taco, NSA's Secret Weapon Launches Attack on Russian Computer Network."
  • I suspect you'll find that they are not called T1's, but rather E1's in Moscow, and they're 2.0mbps, not 1.54.
  • The bastards!

Had my knickers all in a twist for nothing! Damn. I don't think I've ever been rooked on 4/1 as badly as I was by Illiad, et al.

Hats off to yas, ya schmucks!

  • *flips on humor translator*

    It... Was... A... Joke...

Didja get that? The original article by Sengan was a joke, too. Funny. Ha-ha. Tee-hee.

  • "Closer to dad!"

As of April 1st, reliable sources have confirmed that Linus Torvalds, who earlier worked for a Californian firm Transmeta, is moving to Elbrus International for a position of a department head.

His move to permanent residence in Moscow is thought to have been influenced by several factors, including a more interesting job (he will be porting the Linux kernel to platforms based on the E2k processor, currently being developed by Elbrus International), a location closer to his father, who has been working as a Moscow correspondent for Finnish radio and television, and a climate that is closer to Finland and more familiar.

Linus's future boss, Boris Babayan, said "Torvald's excellent professional qualities will help to develop a reliable 'home OS' for the E2k processor that will be completely compatible with Linux."

Personally, I'm not sure whether to believe it. It's too serious to be an April Fool's joke, especially since it was posted on a seemingly serious news site, something like the Russian equivalent of ZDNet. I guess I'll just have to waite and see.

  • Don't forget extreme SW and NW Indiana. Seven counties, in CST, that do not observe DST. Make that 4 sane places in the Americas.

Actually, 77 counties in Indiana do not observe DST, they follow EST year-round. There are 5 by Chicago and 5 by Evansville (both Central, therefore using CST and CDT) and 2 by Cinicinatti and three near Louisville (Eastern, using EST and EDT) that do. See this reference [mccsc.edu].

Or was your post an april fools too?

    *sigh*

  • If that's the most original thing they can think of as a joke for April Fools, the ruskies must REALLY be dumb.. You can't make an effective joke about anything THIS serious over the internet.. The headline tipped me off right away.. Linus moving to Russia to make practically no money (given the current value of the ruble; or lack thereof) working on porting linux to a chip that does not even exist? Come on, people.. let's try and be creative once in awhile, ok?
  • Aaah, it's a decent question.

Well, what are all those computers-things then?
I've got this big box here with blinky lights on 'em. What can it do? (another decent question!) And there's this, this thing with Looooots of buttons on it, what's that then? But seriously: I don't care if it's a decent question or not. A lot of flamebait are decent questions too. This moderator should ask himself: "Do I really need to see this post to understand the discussion at hand? Is it on topic?"
    No?

Well then why shove it up to the front of the queue? You could have just given the guy a straight answer and get it over with, instead of putting it in the spotlight like this.

This is exactly the problem with a lot of discussion groups online. People who just wander in having not at least a basic grasp of what the group is for, and just firing of a question instead. It's called noise. It disturbs the signal.

    Jeeeeez.

  • I know that, most of the honourable gentlemen and ladies at /. find the idea that Linus leaves highly paid job in the US to the research center in Moscow, where highest salary is probably no more than $500 a month. A month! And they don't get paid for months.

Most importantly, there they've got no money to develop their great ideas. If Linux was to work there, he would find that actually he can't do much, as no money means: no equipment, no newest data, no partners, no shit.

For me, as a Russian, is very sad to see this stupid joke. The people at the Babayan's lab have some of the greatest designs, but they have no chance to implement them, because of lack of funding. As a person who known Russia not from newspaper, I can say they are not going to get anything from Government in nearest 3-5 years. Their only hope is foreign investments, but companies like Intel doesn't really want to develop something superior than their own designs.
Even if they are to buy the company, it will be just to make sure the designs will never leave the door.

The joke originally comes from Russian newspaper, and I tell you, that in Russia fools day (1 April) is generally the day, when most sad and sick jokes are done.

The last guys who will laugh today are the E2K processor team (maybe Linus won't laugh at that too, he is ethical guy enough not to laugh at someone's major problems, at least I hope so and want to believe).

    :(

p.s. Article was not translated properly, in particular OS is said to be "native", but not "dependable" as in suggested variant.

p.p.s. Spell and grammar sucks, I know and I am working on it.

  • T1 does exist. In fact most companies choose optic-fiber lines, since they not much more expensive than copper wires.

BUT, hardware is not expensive, BANDSWIDTH is damn expansive, and it's common that a company with fiber-optic capable of 1-2Mbit, uses only 64kb, because it costs almost as much as T1 in the US.

    That majorly sucks.

  • Why is this posting getting moderated down?? This seems to be the most relevant post for this whole article! I understand that it's in as an AC posting, but that shouldn't be any reason to drop its score down - it is on topic, flames no one, etc, etc. What the heck is the deal here?

    Leilah
  • All right, this was funny - but you should've checked some things first:
    1. I doubt that Linus would move to Moscow with his dad, especially at this time when his dad isn't even in Moscow. He's taking care of his other kids at home in Finland. He'll be back in Moscow soon though.
    2. The Russian climate is different from the Finnish one. Finland generally has warmer winters, especially in the south where Linus would be.
So, you should've written that Linus has finally given up his golden rule not to participate in politics and has now gone to Russia to study the remnants of the commie Soviet Union. Also, you might've thrown in a note about RMS accompanying him. Keep that in mind for next year... ;) Fabbe
  • Heh. I heard that this morning as I was in that semi-asleep mode after waking up. They had me confused there for a few minutes until I remembered the date.

  • The Userfriendly lawsuit is a joke, too, isn't it?

I doubt it. It started too early and has gone on too long.

And we won't be getting more information until next week, according to Daily Static :p.

  • Can anyone independently confirm this (ideally by talking to Linus)? After the recent hype about the processor, this seems suspiciously like marketing vapour (though I could well be mistaken).

  • Everyone is assuming that this is an April Fool's thing, but I'm not so sure. It's important to remember that Russia is the country that gave us vodka, so I'm thinking they probably give you a big keg of it when you get there, and I think that'd entice just about anyone to work there.

It's not so ludicrous that Linus could go to work there, he may just be a raging alcoholic.

  • Maybe the International Date Line has already crossed over to April 1!!!
  • ...but the claim isn't outrageous enough. If the claim were that Linus were being hired to port linux to the new Turbotron2000 plasma-based quantum CPU, now that would be a good April Hack's Day joke!

No, this was better...if they went for the really outrageous one, you wouldn't have seen as many people falling for it... :)

  • Think about it :) No Wintel....what else would you need...
  • Have you been to whitehouse.com? Why would you want to crack a porn site?
  • Although your world wonders me,
With your majestic, and superior cackling hen,
Your people i do not understand..
And to you i shall put an end.

    then you'll...never hear...surf music again.

  • What with this and hearing that the IOC had revoked Sydney's right to hold the 2000 olympic games on the radio (Beijing and Manchester being asked to reapply), I think the world is comming to an end :)
  • Same here ... for a while I couldn't work out why no other stations were carrying news about it, seeing how JJJ is delayed 3 hours over here. It had me going for a while.
  • ..because you are attempting to pick apart little parts of a post that is so obviously BS that you needent have wasted your time. I think anyone that saw it ought to see that.
  • Doesn't mean they are not out to get you
  • Any longtime reader of Slashdot should know that this is a joke because Sengan could never post a story like that without making some kind of comment.

Nice touch having the story site in russian so the majority of the readers can't read it, though.
  • possibly because it could be more BS and hoaxy than the origional story?
